Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez Valley, CA

With personal and professional pressures mounting, I decided to go back into retirement…and then, I decided to take a quick, restorative trip to the Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez Valley (Solvang, Los Olivos, and Los Alamos). It would only be a 2-day road trip, but I was optimistic about what a couple days between the ocean and wine country could do for my mood. So, I gassed up the car, kicked the tires, and hit Interstate 101 North from Los Angeles.

Bellingham, Washington

There is a place called Bellingham in the glorious green state of Washington. Bellingham is a town nestled into the top of the state – the top of the country, really – right near the border of Canada in the west. 

If you ever get the chance to visit Bellingham, I absolutely encourage you to do so. The town is absolutely perfect for people who truly embrace the outdoors and really appreciate the beauty of nature.

Portland, Oregon

I live in Seattle, Washington, which means I am lucky enough to be in a (reasonable) driving distance from some very cool places including Vancouver, British Columbia, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, and Portland, Oregon. 

I tend to travel to Portland every 18 months or so to see family or friends, but even though I’ve been going to Portland regularly since I was 12, I am always floored at the beauty of both Washington and Oregon. The drive, if you ever get the chance to do it, is simply gorgeous. 

It was a brief trip—a friend’s wedding—but last year, I took the train for a longer visit and the scenery was stunning.
