An important subject at The Gorgeous Girl's Guide is affordability. We thrive to educate our members on how simple and inexpensive being, staying, looking, and feeling healthy can be. This includes skincare. While there are several skincare brands we love, like Juice Beauty and Youth to the People, the costs associated with these amazing brands can surmount and weigh heavily on your bank accounts. So, I have developed a very simple, inexpensive method, proven to give your skin exactly what it needs for about twenty dollars.
Dirt. Oil. Water.
External care of your skin can be as easy as dirt, oil, and water. The concept behind The Gorgeous Girl's Guide's DOW Method is that when we use simple ingredients found in nature, we will find our beauty balance. This is true, both, in and on our bodies, including our faces.
Dirt is a natural part of life, and it takes on many forms. For our intents and purposes, when we discuss the dirt portion of DOW, we are speaking specifically about clays. There are hundreds of clays from which to choose, and each of them with their own benefits. We offer our members small-batch montmorillonite clay (also known as bentonite) here in our store, and a quick online search will lead you to discover Rhassoul, Moroccan, Sea, French Green, and Kaolin clays.
Members are encouraged to purchase dry clays, and mix them with any number of ingredients in order to make masks according to your unique and ever-changing needs. Here are a few ideas:
- Apple cider vinegar and water
- Fresh squeezed lemon juice and honey
- Warm full-fat dairy milk and honey
- Caffeinated tea and warm full-fat dairy milk (or vegan substitute)
- Turmeric and warm water
- Yogurt and avocado
- Fresh pressed vegetable and fruit juice
We live for oils, here at The Gorgeous Girl's Guide! There is no one oil solution; different oils do different things, and react differently with different skin types and individuals. Some of our favorites are coconut, avocado, and sweet almond, but there are hundreds from which to choose. Be sure to check out our latest post on oils and how each may react with your skin, as well as our articles on:

To use your facial oil of choice, I recommend placing your oil or oil blend into a convenient dropper bottle. Your oil will be best transferred into the layers of your skin when your skin is warm and moist, like right after a light steam with a hot washcloth. If you don't have a washcloth handy, try warming and wetting your hands in hot water (safely at 120˚fahrenheit), and apply your oil without drying your hands.
When applying your oil, use 7-10 drops, rub the oil into your palms, and apply all over your face, neck (front and back), and décolletage. You can also use your favorite facial oil as a cleanser!
The water portion of The DOW Method consists of (of course) water, as well as natural, water-based products like with hazel and rose water, both of which can be used as an astringent after washing.
I recommend transferring your witch hazel or rosewater to a spray bottle, if it doesn't come in one, and spar your face liberally after your daily oil cleansing. Allow the astringent to dry a bit, and add you facial oil while your skin is still damp.
It's that simple!
