Your bed is where you end and begin your day, making it the most important piece of furniture in your home, and therefore, the piece that needs the most attention, warmth, and love. Unfortunately, too many people have been taught to loathe sleep and the concept of staying in, enjoying their homes and what should be the comforts of it. That is, until they learned about the practice of Hygge (pronounced hue-guh), a Danish word used to describe a very special feeling or moment with friends or alone, at home or out, that is always cozy and charming! Being part-Dane, Hygge is a common concept for me, and might explain my obsession with creating special, warm, comfortable moments at home, for myself, my family, and our friends. For the intents and purposed of this post, let's focused on my favorite ways to create a warm, comfy bed –– perfect for the fall and winter months, known as nesting season!Read more
When trying to decide what to do with the 115" back wall of my new workspace, I turned instantly to art but instantly hit a snag. I don't really care about art. It's not that I don't like art, but that I don't feel any sort of attachment to the art of others. This might be the curse of a maker –– I need to feel emotionally attached to any sort of artistic expression, be it mine of someone else's, and I have never felt connected to someone else's drawings, vectors, paintings, or photos. So, as you could imagine, this put a dampener on my decor plans.
And then, I had a stroke of genius.Read more
One of my favorite things about the spring and summer months is the gardening. It's the perfect time to head into the garden center and pick up trees, plants, and shrubs. I began in April with a couple Royal Palms, and added a slew of succulents over the next eight weeks, or so. I'm not finished, but here is some of what I've done and learned, thus far.Read more
And what a difference these Royal Palms made! Also known as Majestic Palms, they are pretty simple to take care of. Once at home in their pots, I watered them until their soil was completed soaked through, and water drained into their dishes. In the day, they receive a good mount of direct sunlight and are able to stay warm. I trimmed any brown edges from their leaves, and removed any dust. Now, these palms will hang out in their new home, and I won't have to water them, again, until their soil is dry.Read more
After ordering the perfect mirrors from Amazon, I was disappointed when they arrived completely shattered. So, I opted for a set of mirrors from IKEA, which were less expensive and hand-delivered by our local store. This way, I could assure they would arrive intact.
Also, after months of waiting, the specific curtain rods I had my eye on since we moved in October, finally came back into stock. So, when I received notice from Home Depot, I couldn't wait to order them! These drapery rods are made from one solid piece of steel, so they are non-telescoping, and are adorned with finials made to look like cut and polished crystal. I ordered mine in a chrome finish.Read more
For the first two months after moving into our new place, we lived without proper lighting in the master bedroom. Before leaving our old place, I sold my wobbly crystal lamps to my crazy neighbor for $35. I never did get that money. So, now, here we were, in our new place, using an old lamp with a faulty switch, that didn't match with anything in our new place. It was time for new lamps.Read more
In October we moved into a brand new condo, and when we did, we made a very important decision. We were starting over. This move was all about shifting the energy in our lives, letting go of the old, and looking forward. So, we ditched the majority of our furniture and housewares, and started buying new stuff. It had been over a decade since I'd bought anything new, and this shift was just what we needed to manifest our goals in the last quarter of 2017 and beyond.Read more
After moving into our new place in October, one of the very first things we had delivered was a new bed frame, mattress, and boxspring. I wanted the place where we rest our heads to be free from bad energy from the past, I wanted a fresh start, and a new bed signifies just that. So, during the summer, months before our move, I began stalking a number of frames and settle on one very beautiful bed that added a touch of felinity and sophistication, while honoring the masculine energy that would be sharing this space with me.Read more
When it comes to organizing, simplifying, storing, and space-saving, IKEA is king. And for most of us, the first place in our homes that we desperately need to organize is our closets, especially if we're sharing them with our significant others. One of the biggest issues are shoes –– so many shoes, so little space. And what about sweaters and scarves, belts, gloves, and handbags? A quick trip or online order from IKEA can help anyone organize their closet on a budget and with style. Here are a few of my favorite organizational helpers...Read more
When I was about 7 years old, my mother taught me how to organize a closet. Over 30 years later, and I am a wizard when it comes to pulling a closet together. So, as I am organizing my new place, I am excited to pull my clothes out of boxes, and place them on new hangers, and in my closets. Today, it's all about the coat closet, and organizing this space is simpler than organizing a main closet.
