How to Get Back in the Gym

Desperately Seeking Endorphins:

I didn't know how I was going to do it. After a month on bedrest, several months of being very ill, and a devastating miscarriage, I didn't how to get started. What's more, I hadn't worked out in over 9 months, after hurting my back during deadlifts.

I didn't know how it would happen, but I knew it just had to happen. I had to get back into shape, I needed to stay as busy as I could throughout the day, and I needed to feel better. The depression was and still is palpable. I needed to exercise.

How I Got Started:

Well, as they say, you've got to start at the start, so I fired up the treadmill and hopped on. With my iPad perched atop, a hand towel to wipe away the sweat, and a bottle of water, I walked at a comfortable incline and a relatively slow speed, while watching an episode of Scandal. Before I knew it, I'd been on the machine for 45 minutes and was drenched in sweat.

God, it felt good.

Afterward, I opened the ever faithful Nike Training Club app and its 15-minute Better Butt exercise and got to work on my lower body. I didn't rush or push myself to do things that hurt. When I needed to stop, I stopped, and then I kept going. At the end, I felt accomplished and proud that I'd taken the first step back to wellness and sanity, all within an hour.
