After using Shea Moisture's 100% Virgin Coconut Oil haircare system for about a year, I have come to know that my hair does not like the weight of the oil in the system, however, it loves the moisture in the system, which comes from the oil! I had to find a happy medium. So, before I wash my hair with this particular shampoo and conditioner from Shea Moisture, I clarify my hair with a shampoo that has no or less oil. This brought me to my discovery of Acure's Smooth and Manageable shampoo and conditioner.
I usually enjoy Acure, but did switch from this brand to Shea Moisture based on the fact that Acure didn't give me much in the way of moisture, and I began to suffer a significant amount of dryness, dandruff, and breakage. However, upon switching to Shea Moisture, I quickly realized their Shea Butter laden products, while incredibly moisturizing, are incredibly heavy for my hair type. So, I came up with a simple and effective solution.
I use Acure, and other light or clarifying shampoos, before each wash with Shea Moisture's 100% Virgin Coconut Oil system. This helps me avoid build-up. After using the Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioner, I use the Coconut Oil leave-in conditioner, but started cutting it with equal parts of water. This works well is keeping my hair moisturized and protected, without creating a terribly heavy oily buildup.
Now, as far as this particular system from Acure goes, I used it on its own this week and did not love it. I could instantly feel the loss of moisture and protection that I get from Shea Moisture. The shampoo smells yummy, but the conditioner has a synthetic aroma to it. It's weird. Still, that aroma doesn't stay in the hair, which smells lovely after it was all said and done.
Here's what I've learned –– I'm sticking with Shea Moisture, for now, and this shampoo from Acure will work great to remove unnecessary oils from my hair before applying the Coconut Oil system from Shea. As for this systems conditioner, I'm sure the men in the house won't mind using it. They can have it!
