How to Save Money and Eat Well on Vacation

The holidays are nearly upon us, and many of you will be heading out of town between now and the new year. It’s pretty simple these days to find deals on airfare and hotel rooms, but what always seems to cost more than we anticipate is the cost of food while we’re out of town. 


Extended Stay Hotels:

One of the most obvious ways to save money on food and drinks while on vactation is to book a room at an extended stay hotel that features a full size refrigerator, stovetop, pots, utensils, and dishes.

If you are taking a quick road trip, it might be a good idea to take groceries with you, and stick the fridge when you get there. Be sure to plan your recipes ahead of time and keep it simple.


Run of the Mill Hotels: 

If there isn’t much of a choice, and you find yourself staying at a run of the mill hotel room with no refrigerator, microwave, stovetop, or other kitchen wares, you'll have to make do. Bringing a cooler filled with ice will help, exponentially. At the very least, fill your hotel sink with ice and make it work!

The important thing here is that, whether you bring snacks and food from home, or shop when you have reached your destination, you will have hundreds of dollars by not ordering room service, or take out. Make sure that, when you do eat out, it's because you want to, not because you have to.

What to Bring:

Here's a short list of things I brought during a recent road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. I think it's worth saying that my friend laughed at my from bringing 2 bags of groceries, but then thanked me for saving everyone hundreds of dollars in food fees.

  • Granola
  • Dried Fruit
  • Rice or Nut Milks (non-refrigerated)
  • Water
  • Yogurt
  • Loaf of bread
  • Cans/Pouches of Tuna
  • Mayo
  • Peanut Butter
  • Jelly
  • Honey
  • Utensils
  • Juices
